Bleeping indicators
Is it a legal requirement to have the bleeping noise when your van is attached when you use your indicators ??

Hi Phill
Yes (ish ) must have a warning to inform the driver that the van trafficators are working or failed Can be one of the following bleeping noise ( front or rear of the car ) extra light on the dash built in repeater light in the maufacturers dash board Should be noted in the car hand book ) may need the dealer to set this up in the car managment ecu

Doesn't it also depend on the age of the car? On my 2004 Volvo S80 no bleeping noise but the indicator light would flash rapidly. Not sure about the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

the volvo should have had a duel traff relay rapid traff indictors ie your old volvo means the car traff relay was over loaded with the extra 21 watt van traff indictor in use modern cars now have a "plug and play " kits in various forms but some cars still need programming at the ecu by an auto spark, towbar fitter or dealer Jeep Grand Cherokee wiring kits explaned https://www.pfjones.co.uk/towbar-wir...ring-kits.html

We bought the Jeep second hand which is why we have no idea who or what has been fitted.

I have a dedicated wiring set for my Insignia, which brings the caravan into the car systems. With the caravan attached and the van tail light fails the appropriate side marker flashes (as cars always have done when a bulb fails)
rapidly, with a message on the dash telling me to check that indicator, once took a bulb out to see what happened. Marvellous things they can do today. Just three connections to the car. One to number one pin on the diagnostic socket, one to a fused power source and one to the high level L E D brake light, lower voltage I think. No annoying beeping, which I could not hear on a motorway, or SWMBO getting annoyed because I kept asking if it was beeping. Insignia dose not need reprogramming.

Mine uses a dedicated BMW relay system, which monitors all trailer lighting for faults. There is no bleeping, no flashing light, it simply notices when a trailer is plugged in and notifies any issues via graphic panel. It says something like 'Left trailer indicator fault' with a small graphic. So my guess is that a system which only activates when there is a failure, must be acceptable.
The easy way to test it, is to remove a cover and remove a lamp and see what happens. |
