Cheshire Hike 2015

Cheshire Scouts are out and about again.

Just had a fantastic day helping out at one of the Checkpoints at this years Cheshire Hike.

Absolutely brilliant to see all the youngsters coming through the checkpoint, all tired and weighed down by their backpacks, but all remaining steadfastly resolute and cheerful.

Have just heard that they are all now safe and sound in their overnight camps. Hope they all get some sleep tonight.

Finish line is at Helsby tomorrow afternoon. If anyone is in the area and sees any of them tomorrow, give 'em a toot and a wave - I know they'll appreciate a little support.

Cheers all,

Kev

Good on you Kev. Scouting is a wonderful organisation and has helped to develop many kids. Long may it continue.

I Totally Agree John.

The Cheshire Hike especially is an amazing achievement for all the youngsters taking part.

Today those aged between 12-14 have hiked 26Km and tomorrow they will do another 14Km - all whilst carrying full camping kit (Younger than 12 do a bit less, older than 14 do a fair bit more!)

It's not just the hiking, but they also do all their own route plotting and map reading whilst en-route, and walk in teams of 2 - rather than as part of a large group.

Needless to say, everything is very closely monitored by the Leaders, who tirelessly work to ensure that the hikers (especially the younger ones), do everything by themselves, without ever actually being totally out of sight.

The finish tomorrow will be a fantastic experience for the kids, as over 400 hikers will converge at the finish line, meeting up for the first time having started from 3 different start points.

Friendships made over this weekend are of the type that last a lifetime!

Cheers,

Kev

Kev sounds really great. Hope the kids enjoy. They are certainly hiking a long way which is a great achievement.

Hi kev. My brother in law has just had a long service award for 40years in the scout movement and he says he has loved every day although it has changed a lot no more cold kibblestone swimming pool but the camp is still there , so I know they all love it young and old and gives them bonding and confidence for later years

Well, the youngsters all arrived safe and sound. Tired, with sore feet, but happy and all rightfully proud of their achievement.

Phil, much credit is due to your brother in law for his lifetime's commitment to the organisation. The time, energy and enthusiasm given by the Leaders is simply staggering.

I feel I must stress that I am not myself a uniformed Scout Leader (although my wife is Akela to our local Cub Pack), but I do try and help out 'behind the scenes' whenever required.

Cheers all,

Kev

Nothing wrong working in the background Kev. It is still vital help when needed.
